"The project will further develop the
capacity of the port to meet the needs of increasing traffic by expanding an
existing container terminal and constructing a new one to accommodate large,
modern container vessels,” the World Bank said in a statement.
The 23-year loan will have a 10-year grace
period, it added.
The Rijeka Gateway II project is a
continuation of the Rijeka Gateway program, also financed by the World Bank. It
aimed at improving the competitiveness of Rijeka port, situated
strategically as the gateway for the pan-European transport Corridor Vb, which
links Budapest and Rijeka, on the northern Croatian Adriatic coast, via the
Croatian capital Zagreb.
